Notes About Kindle and Smashwords Distribution

For those of you who haven’t submitted an eBook to Amazon (Kindle Direct Publishing) or Smashwords for distribution there are a couple of things to keep in mind regarding time.  Assuming your eBook file has been properly formatted and you have an acceptable piece of cover art, getting your eBook on either website isn’t instantaneous.  I submitted my eBook to both sites on Saturday evening.

For Amazon it took until Sunday evening for my eBook to show up for sale.  It took until Tuesday for the cover art to show up.  I posted the cover art as a ‘customer image’ so something would be there until the actual cover art was posted.

For Smashwords, the book and cover art also showed up on Sunday, but I am still waiting to find out whether my eBook will be included in the Smashwords Premium Catalog.  The premium catalog includes those books that will be carried at Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo, Stanza, diesel, etc.  I just checked Smashwords and my eBook still hasn’t been reviewed.  I guess I’ll just have to wait, because the potential distribution should be worth the wait.  In fact Smashwords just announced that they are expanding to mobile aps like Apple, Android, Windows Phone 7 and HP’s WebOS. (More here)

In the meantime, meaning almost as soon as I viewed the submitted files in different viewers, I caught a couple of minor typos, and some formatting I want to fix to make the eBook display better in the different ereaders.  So now I need to post a revised file, but that should be easier than the initial submission.

My next goal is to establish a presence on social networking sites, get my name known, and see if anyone will buy my book.

As always, if you have any comments, questions, or concerns about this post or any of my posts, please let me know.  I would really appreciate your feedback.  Thanks.
