At midnight whence all is still
I sit on my bedside
And drink in the quiet
For the first time in the day
I am alone with my thoughts
You and the animals sleep
But I am restless before resting
And my thoughts will not
Let me abandon them so easily
I consider time and space
Mortality and immortality
God and nothingness
And know that
Everything
And I
Will end
And that words
And deeds
And intellect will not
Gain me a moment of breath
Beyond that
Which I
Am alloted by
Time
And space
And the physics
That determines
My fate.
