It was the seventies
And we were
The beneficiaries
Of the sexual revolution
As godless and free
As our parent’s purses
Allowed us to be
We were told that college
Was about knowledge
But there was alcohol
And pot for those who cared to
But my favorite drug
My consummate indulgence
And distraction
Was sex
Wonderfully casual
Freely available
Mind-bendingly trippy
Sex melding the flesh
Of young lovers
Seeking pleasure
And an orgasmic high
Available to any and all
Simply for the asking
But what I never expected
Was that my lust for the flesh
Would be the end of
My sexual freedom
Because among my lovers
Was one whom I could not
Simply cast away
The one whose body
I could not give up
Whose heart and soul
Merging so completely with mine
That we became one
Five decades have passed
And she is with me still
And although we are not now
Who we were then
I love and desire her
No less than when we first
Made love in my college
Dorm room
So many, many years ago
When it was the seventies
