I was not born to wait in the wings

I was not born to wait in the wings

There was a girl I knew
In my college days
Named Lisa
Who loved to fuck
As much as I
So we were
In the parlance of the bard
Well met
At least on that account
But
She had ambitions
Of a career on the stage
Of performing Violetta at the Met
Of becoming a diva
But
She had a body
More suited for Brunhilde
Or some other Wagnerian
Prima donna
And although she promised me
A life of riches and fame
Of easy sex and a gigolo’s fortunes
It was the seventies
And love was free
Love was casual
And I wasn’t ready to
Become what she wanted me to be
So we went our separate ways
None the worse
For experiencing the other
And even if I had agreed
Signed the contract
Let myself be her understudy
It wouldn’t have worked out
Because
I was not born to wait in the wings
